SOUL – A Painting Series by Neel Ratan
There are moments in an artist’s life when creation stops being a conscious act and becomes a spiritual experience.
The SOUL series was born out of such a moment — a time when I felt a light awaken within me, uniting my mind, body, and spirit as one. During the six months I spent creating these twenty paintings, I wasn’t just painting; I was becoming the art itself. Every colour, every movement, every breath felt like a conversation with something greater — something invisible yet deeply alive within me.
The Idea Behind the Series
The SOUL series is my personal exploration of what the soul truly is — how something without form can shape everything we feel and see.
Across these works, you’ll notice golden patches that appear like flowing, radiant energy. They represent the formless spirit, a timeless presence that moves through all of us. These golden shapes float freely across the canvases — neither confined nor defined — symbolising the unspoken light that connects life itself.
In contrast, the acrylic colour forms embody the physical world — the human figures, full of emotion and depth. They are parents, partners, lovers, and artists — all intertwined through feeling. The union of the golden soul and the colourful body expresses the eternal dialogue between the spiritual and the physical, the unseen and the seen, love and being.
At its heart, SOUL is about the emotional threads that tie us together — the quiet strength that love gives us, the empathy that helps us endure, and the simple truth that relationships are built not on status or power, but on feeling.
The Journey of Creation
Creating this series was not just an artistic process — it was a transformation.
Each day in the studio felt like entering a sacred space, where time dissolved and emotion took form. There were moments of silence so deep that colours seemed to breathe on their own.
There were times when tears would fall without reason — not from sadness, but from an overwhelming sense of connection.
Through SOUL, I discovered that painting can become prayer. That art is not separate from life, but its most honest reflection. That what we call the “soul” is not somewhere else — it’s right here, glowing quietly in every act of creation, in every gesture of love.
What These Paintings Mean to Me
Each painting in the SOUL series carries a piece of my own journey — my search for meaning, my gratitude for love, my surrender to the flow of feeling.
Together, they tell a story of unity: how emotion bridges the gap between spirit and form, between what we see and what we sense.
This body of work will always remain one of the most precious chapters of my life. It taught me that art is not about perfection — it’s about presence.
And that the soul, though invisible, can be seen when love takes colour.
